Industrial equipment DPP FAQ

Do all industrial equipment products already require a Digital Product Passport?

No. ESPR establishes the framework, but product-specific delegated acts determine which products are covered, the detailed requirements and application dates. Other EU legislation may create separate passport duties for particular products.

Should industrial equipment use a model-level or item-level passport?

The applicable product rules determine the required level. Operationally, long-life equipment often benefits from serialised item identity because inspections, repairs, ownership and status changes occur to the individual asset.

What information belongs in an industrial equipment DPP?

The binding dataset depends on applicable legislation. A practical architecture may prepare product identity, specifications, materials, responsible-operator data, instructions, compliance evidence, service information and lifecycle events, with access controlled by role.

Can a DPP replace inspection or certification systems?

A DPP can connect relevant records and evidence, but it does not itself perform an inspection, certify a product or replace the legal and technical processes required for conformity or safe use.

Can existing ERP and PLM data be reused?

Yes. The DPP should govern and exchange authoritative data from existing systems rather than create another manual silo. A data dictionary and ownership model are needed before integration.

How should an industrial manufacturer begin?
