What Is a Digital Product Passport?

A Digital Product Passport (DPP) is a structured digital record linked to a product through a unique identifier and a data carrier such as a QR code. It allows authorised people and systems to access information about that product’s identity, characteristics, sustainability, compliance and lifecycle.

Under the EU Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), a DPP is intended to improve access to product information, support compliance checks and strengthen traceability across the value chain. The passport is therefore not simply a marketing page or electronic label. It combines product identity, governed data, access rules and long-term availability.

The shortest useful definition

A DPP connects a physical product to accurate, structured and accessible digital information throughout the period required for that product.

Regulatory scope

Does every product need a Digital Product Passport?

No - not automatically. ESPR establishes the legal framework, but detailed duties are introduced through product-specific delegated acts. Those measures define the affected product group, application date, required information, passport level, data carrier, access rights and update responsibilities.

This distinction matters. A manufacturer should not assume that every product is already subject to a DPP, and a software provider should not promise blanket “automatic ESPR compliance.” The correct approach is to monitor applicable measures and build a flexible product-data capability that can be configured when the requirements are known.

The ESPR framework applies broadly to physical goods placed on the EU market or put into service, subject to stated exclusions and the scope of future measures. The Commission’s working plan helps indicate priority areas, but it is not a substitute for adopted product-specific law.

Six building blocks of a credible DPP

Persistent product identity

A product passport is connected through a data carrier to a persistent unique product identifier. Product-specific rules determine whether the passport applies at model, batch or item level.

A physical or digital data carrier

A QR code, barcode or another automatic identification medium connects the physical product, its packaging or accompanying documentation to the passport.

Structured product data

The passport is more than a web page. Its underlying information should be structured, machine-readable where appropriate, searchable and transferable using interoperable formats.

Controlled stakeholder access

Customers, manufacturers, repairers, recyclers, market-surveillance bodies and other actors may receive access to different information according to the applicable rules.

Evidence and integrity

The operating model must support reliable information, data authentication, security, privacy and protection against unauthorised or misleading changes.

Lifecycle availability

Passport information must remain accurate, complete and up to date, with continuity and update responsibilities designed for the required availability period.

Information layer

What information can a DPP contain?

The final dataset depends on the product-specific measure. ESPR’s framework and Annex III provide categories from which detailed requirements can be established. In practice, manufacturers should expect their readiness work to span several information domains:

  • Product, model, batch or item identity and relevant classifications
  • Economic operator, manufacturing facility and responsible-party information where required
  • Materials, substances of concern, recycled content and composition data
  • Performance, durability, repair, maintenance, reuse and end-of-life information
  • Carbon or environmental footprint information where the applicable rules require it
  • Declarations, certificates, test evidence and conformity-related documentation
  • Lifecycle events such as manufacture, inspection, repair, refurbishment or retirement

A sound platform should distinguish reusable master data from batch, serialised-asset, document and lifecycle-event records. That makes it possible to publish the correct evidence at the correct passport level without duplicating or silently overwriting history.

The most useful first step is not choosing a QR-code supplier. Begin by understanding the product portfolio, regulatory ownership and quality of the underlying data.

Digital Product Passport FAQ

Is a Digital Product Passport already mandatory for every product?

No. ESPR is a framework regulation. Product-specific delegated acts determine which product groups require a DPP, the applicable timeline and the detailed requirements. Separate EU legislation may impose passport duties for particular products, such as qualifying batteries.

Is a QR code the same as a Digital Product Passport?

No. A QR code can be a data carrier that opens the passport. The DPP also requires a governed identity, structured information, access rights, data integrity, availability and processes for creating and updating information.

Will every passport contain the same information?

No. The required data is defined for the relevant product group. A manufacturer should therefore build a flexible data architecture and validate the final dataset against the applicable delegated act.

Can a passport be created at product-model level?

Potentially. ESPR allows the applicable delegated act to specify model, batch or item level. The right level depends on the product group and its adopted requirements.
